  • What Is Meditation?

    An ordinary person may consider meditation as a worship or prayer. But it is not so. Meditation means awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. “Watching your breath” is meditation; listening to the birds is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation.

    Meditation is not a technique but a way of life. Meditation means ‘a cessation of the thought process’ . It describes a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns . The observer (one who is doing meditation) realizes that all the activity of the mind is reduced to one.

    In simple terms…… meditation refers to different techniques that help you manage your thoughts, emotions, thinking patterns and your reactions to stressful situations.     • Meditation decreases the metabolic rate and it can lower the heart rate……this is the same as when you are in a state of deep rest and relaxation.     • It also reduces stress and how it does that is when you focus on the breathe….. Your breathing will become slower…and when we are stressed we release a chemical known as cortisol which is an acid and it is released into your blood stream. Now when we breathe at a slower rate that acid will reduce in our bloodstream and we become better oxygenated and when this occurs it causes our stress to lower and this in turn will it will lower your blood pressure.

    • It can enhance your energy, strength, athletic ability. It just makes physical activity easier so if your someone that struggles with cardio vascular activity like myself than this can be very beneficial for you.

    • And one more physical beneficial factor that I thought was very interesting and that is that meditation is said to slow down the aging process. Now I don’t know about you but if someone told me I could slow down the aging process I would be the first in line to jump on that band wagon.

  • Ashtanga Yoga

     Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga recorded by the sage Vamana Rishi in the Yoga Korunta, an ancient manuscript “said to contain lists of many different groupings of asanas, as well as highly original teachings on vinyasa, drishti, bandhas, mudras, and philosophy” (Jois 2002 xv). The text of the Yoga Korunta “was imparted to Sri T. Krishnamacharya in the early 1900′s by his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari, and was later passed down to Pattabhi Jois during the duration of his studies with Krishnamacharya, beginning in 1927″ (“Ashtanga Yoga”). Since 1948, Pattabhi Jois has been teaching Ashtanga yoga from his yoga shala, the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (Jois 2002 xvi), according to the sacred tradition of Guru Parampara [disciplic succession] (Jois 2003 12).

    Ashtanga yoga literally means “eight-limbed yoga,” as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices:

    Is Ashtanga for You?  

    Ashtanga yoga is extremely popular. It is a vigorous, athletic style of practice. It appeals to those who like a sense of order and who like to do things independently.

    Following is an overview of the 8 limbs of Ashtanga yoga, described as practices :

    Yama (control) : a series of don’ts in contact with the world outside, so that your relationships as well as your energy remain harmonious, providing the peaceful background needed for deep meditation. The disciplines in Yama typically include nonviolence, truth, honesty, sexual continence, forbearance, fortitude, kindness, straightforwardness, moderation in diet & bodily purity.

    Niyama (rules of conduct) : a series of do’s that helping in detaching from the world and the ego, so that it becomes easier to let go of the doer in deep meditation. Activities in Niyama typically consist of austerity, contentment, belief in God, charity, worship of God, study of teachings and scriptures, modesty, having a discerning mind, repetition of prayers (japa), observance of vows and performing sacrifices.

    Asana (posture) : as a motionless body makes the mind quiet, and as an unstable body cannot remain motionless in deep meditation (when the I am the body idea is lost), many postures have been described of which at the least one sitting posture must be mastered in order to reach a deep state of meditation.     Pranayama (control of breath) : control of breath brings mind under control, while the main aim is to store the energy that will be needed when in deep meditation breathing has stopped.

      Pratyahara (withdrawal of sensory perceptions) : removing the attention from sensory input, so that it ceases to disturb meditation. This may be preceded by some focus on purifying sensory input, such as in rituals, use of meditative sounds, etc… Ultimately prana is withdrawn from the nadis that transport sensory input.

    Dharana (concentration) : the focus of mind on any single object, for example a mantra, or deep concentration on the six subtle centers of the chakras, starting from the first and gradually approaching the seventh, etc…

    Dhyana (uninterrupted meditation) : in which the concentration is uninterrupted, without a single disturbing thought, though this concentration still requires some effort.

    Samadhi (effortless meditation, absorption, equilibrium) : concentration is maintained, but it requires no effort. The doer has disappeared from consciousness. This stage allows for a rather long purification process through which the individual consciousness is finally dissolved in pure cosmic consciousness. After a prolonged practice of samadhi there is no need to practice any longer, because the conscious connection to the divine is everlasting, which is called natural samadhi (sahaj). Ultimately it leads to enlightenment.

    WELCOME to the Spiritual Fitness and Bodywork Center information site. I’m Alton J. Sanders, and first I must tell you all that I LOVE what I do. I have been involved with bodywork and massage therapy since 1998 and I have enjoyed every minute of it.

    I completed my studies as a massage therapist at the National Holistic Institute of massage therapy (NHI), and then went on to finish my degree in Physical Education, which has enhanced my knowledge and skills in bodywork.
    I have discovered that my path in bodywork has been a spiritual one and that the integration of BodyMind, along with the diverse modalities of bodywork, has helped to improve the quality of life for my clients.

    My mission is to improve the health and quality of life of my clients, and to increase consumer awareness about the benefits of yoga, massage therapy & bodywork and brain training. My web site (Spiritualfitness.biz) is one avenue toward fulfilling this mission, by providing information, educational resources as access to professional massages. Another very important goal for me is to help build the perception of massage therapy and the bodywork field as a professional industry.

    The National Exam for Massage Therapists is an exam that ensures all licensed body workers possess the, capabilities and knowledge to perform safe, therapeutic, professional massages. It is important that my clients and potential clients feel assured of my professionalism, skill and knowledge, so in March 2000, while finishing my BA in Physical Education; I took and passed the National Certification of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCTMB) exam. Early in 2005 I was asked to be a member of National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) testing board to help write the national test and accepted with great pleasure, I currently work on the Eligibility Committee and continue support the NCBTMB.
    I have worked with chiropractors, physical therapists, health care providers, and professional body workers while establishing my own massage therapy business. After a few years in the field I began teaching massage therapy and enjoyed working with students and learning more about the massage profession. Within one year I started working as massage coordinator, supervising 5-7 other massage therapist instructors while still instructing classes.
     
     

    The bodywork industry has enriched my life and given me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge in the arts of LaStone®, Esalen massage and Reiki. I received my instruction in LaStone® therapy from the founder of LaStone therapy methods (Mary Nelson, LMT, MLST), at the picturesque retreat of Esalen in Big Sur, CA. I achieved Reiki Mastery in July 2001 and Have taught Reiki I and II classes too many students. I have taught a full 730 hour curriculum which includes Anatomy, Physiology, Body Mechanics, Shiatsu, Reflexology, Swedish, Sports Massage, Salt Glows, Business Management, Professional Development, Reiki, Chair massage, SOAP charting and much more while teaching. At the end of 2006 I became Yoga Alliance certified and began teaching Yoga classes at Yoga Junction in Suisun California. In the present moment I am putting most of energy into my own business here at Spiritual Fitness and Bodywork Center while enjoying every moment.

    I LOVE what I do and I hope that I can facilitate my clients and you to experience the serenity, beauty and tranquility of massage, energy and bodywork.

    Mental performance A common technique used in yoga is breathing through one nostril at a time. Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies of the electrical impulses of the brain have shown that breathing through one nostril results in increased activity on the opposite side of the brain. Some experts suggest that the regular practice of breathing through one nostril may help improve communication between the right and left side of the brain. Studies have also shown that this increased brain activity is associated with better performance and doctors even suggest that yoga can enhance cognitive performance.

    Mood change and vitality Mental health and physical energy are difficult to quantify, but virtually everyone who participates in yoga over a period of time reports a positive effect on outlook and energy level. Yogic stretching and breathing exercises have been seen to result in an invigorating effect on both mental and physical energy and improved mood.

    Pride, and especially anxiety about pride, is something which Hatha Yoga seeks to diminish or eliminate. To one who has been dejected because he cannot do his work properly when he becomes tired, irritable, or haggard, any degree of refreshment may be accompanied by additional degrees of self-respect.

    Can long-term yoga practice decrease stress?

    “To talk about stress, we have to talk about the hormone cortisol. Under normal conditions, your brain slowly releases cortisol into your body to make your muscles work. However, if you’re highly stressed (late for work, deadline due, screaming baby…), your brain thinks there’s an emergency and responds by flooding your body with cortisol. If there really was an emergency, you would need this much cortisol to deal with broken bones, excessive bleeding, and so on. But if you’re just stressed out by life, excess cortisol can lead to ulcers, high blood pressure, bone density loss, and can throw your immune system out of whack (which is why we get sick when we’re stressed). It can also lead to weight gain because the body thinks it’s responding to an emergency and so holds onto as much fat as it can.

    “Your nervous system has several branches. One of these branches controls what your internal organs are doing, and it has two parts: the sympathetic, or “fight or flight” state, which ramps up when you are stressed (and dumps cortisol into your bloodstream) and the parasympathetic, or “rest and digest” state, which controls more day-to-day functions. So, if we’re trying to get less stressed, we’ll need to harness that “rest and digest” state! The only problem is these two states are happening automatically within our bodies and we can’t control them.

    “However, yoga has an answer! The diaphragm, the muscle that we use to breathe, mostly functions automatically, but we can also control our breathing when we want to (like holding our breath underwater). So if we practice specific breathing patterns (called pranayama in yoga) we can slip ourselves into that “rest and digest” state and allow our minds and bodies to get some relief.”

    Can long-term yoga practice boost your mood?

    “The practice of yoga asanas, particularly back bends, are highly associated with the positive emotional effects that are produced with the practice of yoga. After the completion of these exercises, one feels more exuberant. Depression therapy or other types of psychological therapy involve a great deal of back bends since these poses help to open up your chest. During this action, you are able to release any negative emotions such as anger, anxiety, stress, and fear. Once you have let go of these, you will feel reinvigorated and renewed. But this is more than just psychological since expanded lung capacity is physiologically considered to affect your mood and behaviour.”

    “Ashtanga or vinyasa yoga elevates the heart rate as the poses flow continuously and include many sun salutations.”
